Climate Change... It's An Us Issue

Solving complex world issues through collaboration
The Global Goals or SDGs can help us transform our world.

The #COP24 or the United Nations conference of the parties that took place in Poland may be over, but, the message it delivered, is still very much in the media and news after it gave, what can only be described, as a stark warning one that requires urgent action, not just from the Governments, and politicians and member countries of the UN but from the wheels of industry, the multi-national corporation and, from each and every one of us.

No longer can we afford to say, it’s not my problem or who cares; for inaction has, fast become mans biggest enemy, and now, we have a choice, we can either be part of a global solution or face what Sir David Attenborough described as the end of civilization…

The future is not about self or ego it is about collaboration
Working together we can transform our world

And, although it is fantastic that the world woke up after watching the incredible series Blue Planet climate change is not just a #plastic or #ocean issue it's an us issue.

Our rapid growth and development has, placed an exorbitant amount of pressure not just on the world's finite resources, but on every living thing. We need to recognise that everything we do has far reaching consequences and our must have, consumer driven lifestyles are wreaking havoc upon the lives and livelihoods of the rest of the world.

The problem is, time is fast running out and if we continue to ignore the monumental change that is happening across the world on an almost daily basis we will reach the ‘tipping point’ or point of no return and we are not talking 100's or thousands of years we are talking 12. Yes, the latest evidence, reveals that we need to stop the planet warming beyond the revised 1.5C. above pre-industrialised levels before 2030...

And that, is no easy task. The world today is a far cry from what it was back in the 1890's and unfortunately the oil that helped shape our economies and lives is now threatening our very survival because as the gases expelled into the atmosphere when we burn fossil fuels like, coal, gas, peat and oil work to warm the surface of our planet by trapping the heat from the sun into our atmosphere.

Trapping more heat from the sun leads to an increase in global temperatures and this is what we now refer to as global warming or climate change - for climate change refers to the increasing volatility and unpredictability of the world's weather.

Climate Change It's An Us Issue

Our future depends on our ability to change. To survive, we must put aside self and ego and embrace a new mindset, one that goes beyond a term in office and short-term gain for tomorrow is about working for the common good so that we can secure a sustainable future not just for us but for mankind.

The transition to a low-carbon and resource efficient future is not just feasible, it is possible. The inefficient and centralised energy systems of our past will be replaced with a range of smarter, more intuitive low-carbon and green technologies that will utilise the rapidly emerging, digital technologies, like artificial intelligence (AI) that will satisfy our demands, without adding to global carbon emissions. Working in collaboration we can share knowledge to help developing countries adopt not just affordable but resilient energy solutions that will help us achieve a zero carbon world.

Looking forward, we can judge our tomorrows not on the scars of yesterday but on the actions we take today.

The great news is, that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, SDG's or global goals a series of 17 goals and 169 targets present us with an opportunity to address all of the world's most complex issues.

The Sustainable Development Goals An Opportunity To transform Our World

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are not just a series of goals and targets they are a global commitment, a ‘blueprint’ that can help us not just meet the challenges of a changing climate, but transform our world so that we end poverty, protect the planet and safeguard all life, no matter who we are or where we live so that everyone can prosper free from inequality, injustice and harm.

The global goals or SDGs are an opportunity for everyone, everywhere to get involved, to participate and make a positive difference to the world and the time for change is now…

…For the corporations who have, for too long sought to deliver goods and services without considering the impact that there actions would have upon the world, they will need to not just implement better working practices they will need to put integrity and transparency first and take responsibility for their actions no matter who they are or where they operate in the world.

The #SustainableDevelopmentGoals will need companies to not just ‘be good’ but ‘do good’ and integrate #social purpose into not just their corporate strategy but into every thing they do so that they don't just satisfy the needs of the shareholder they safeguard our world
